Mike - absolutely. Social media being heaped upon an organisation for its own sake is destined for failure. It needs to help people to do their jobs more easily, and be linked to business objectives.

Like any new intranet functionality, time spent talking to potential users about what they actually want and need is time well spent.

I absolutely agree. Companies which don't allow their staff to speak on their behalf - and equip them to do so - are really missing a trick.

In many industries, particularly financial services, there is understandable nervousness about regulation, but in my view this is something that should be worked through as a matter of urgency. It's real bank employees who will help win the PR battle, not CEOs and official spokespeople.

A really good post Sharon.

Just this week I was talking to someone from an organisation that has one of the most trusted workforces in the country. But that organisation doesn't trust its workforce to use social media at all. This is sad because of the incredible potential they collectively have to connect with the public at large, and for the public then to communicate onwards.

I'd agree that good external communication starts with good internal communications. Either help your staff find the language that best does that, or they will find their own language which almost certainly won't.

(Disclosure - I run Yammer's Customer Success team for EMEA). Great view, and sorry we couldn't be at the session yesterday to discuss further (we're here on Saturday though!). I really like your point that 'social is not an outcome' and this is something we work closely with our customers to achieve. To add to your points, we see active sponsorship and participation from someone at or near the top of the organisation also being key, having a clear purpose that's something other than "isn't social media awesome" , linked to business objectives, as well as having moderation of the network and engagement with the people in the organisation to help get those objectives realised further. There's some blog posts on adoption at http://blog.yammer.com/blog/best-practices , if this helps!
